Before she could find the words to express her swirling emotions, Leo’s phone buzzed in his pocket, breaking the charged silence. He glanced down at it, frowning.

“I need to take this,” he said, his voice tight. “It’s work.”

Audrey nodded, forcing a small smile. “Of course.”

He looked as if he wanted to say something more, to close the gap that had somehow widened between them, but he only gave her a brief nod before stepping away to take the call.

Audrey watched him walk off, feeling an ache in her chest that was more than just disappointment. It was the creeping fear that this was just the beginning of a pattern that might tear them apart.

Are we too different? The question echoed in her mind as she turned away, making her way back to the heart of the market alone. She was surrounded by the warmth and cheer of the holiday season, by twinkling lights and cheerful carolers, but all she felt was an emptiness gnawing at her heart.

Hours later, after the market had wound down and the last of the stalls had closed for the night, Audrey found herself sitting on a bench near the towering Christmas tree. The snow had begun to fall in earnest, thick flakes blanketing the square in a fresh layer of white. The lights on the tree glowed softly, casting warm colors over the snow-dusted ground.

She hadn’t seen Leo since he’d left to take the call. He had texted her once, apologizing and saying they’d talk later, but it did little to ease the storm of doubts swirling inside her.

“Hey there,” came a familiar voice, breaking through her thoughts.

Audrey looked up to see Denise approaching, her bright smile and oversized Santa hat bringing a welcome burst of cheer. “Mind if I join?”

“Of course not.” Audrey scooted over, managing a small smile as Denise plopped down beside her, brushing snow off her coat.

“Are you okay?” Denise’s voice was soft, her gaze filled with gentle concern. “You’ve seemed… a little off all day.”

Audrey let out a sigh, a mix of relief and frustration bubbling up as she tried to put her feelings into words. “Yeah. Just… thinking.”

“About Leo?” Denise asked knowingly.

Audrey nodded, her chest tight. “It’s… complicated. I care about him, I really do. But I keep wondering if we’re just too different.”

Denise was quiet for a moment, her gaze thoughtful. “Different how?”

Audrey exhaled, searching for the words. “He’s all structure and order. He needs things to make sense, to be in control. And I’m… well, you know me. I love the chaos, the surprises, the spontaneity. I’m not sure we can really find a middle ground.”

Denise’s smile was soft and understanding as she nudged her sister’s shoulder. “Sometimes differences are what make relationships interesting. They make us see the world from another perspective.”

Audrey bit her lip, feeling the conflict tug at her heart. “But what if we’re too different? What if those differences end up hurting us?”

Denise placed a comforting hand on her arm. “Love isn’t always easy, Audrey.
